This is a cross-post from r/AskVet because I want to increase our chances of finding helpful advice. If I get anything wrong with the formatting or anything, I'm sorry! I'll fix it ASAP if told to.
My wife and I got an 8 week-old Russian Blue kitten from someone on a local classifieds web page just a few days ago (on Sunday, 4 days ago at the time of writing this). We had prepared for weeks in advance, bought tons of cat stuff, scratching posts, food, beds, the works.
But when we brought her home, we noticed that she was getting diarrhea and not eating very much, and seemed a bit wobbly, even for a little kitten. We had scheduled a vet visit to get her first round of vaccines, and figured we'd bring up these issues while we were there. On Tuesday, they found out she had feline panleukopenia (AKA parvo). It would cost us potentially thousands of dollars to try and treat her, with an incredibly low likelihood of her recovering. The vet advised that we put her to sleep. We only had her two days, but it completely shattered my wife's heart.
After a bit more research, we found out that Parvo can stay on a surface up to a full year after an encounter. We've seen a few tips on how to disinfect, but they all say that even with insane precision and rigor, it can still remain.
My wife was dying to get this kitten, and now that we've lost it so tragically, it's like an extra slap in the face to read that we might be screwed out of trying again for up to a year.
Beyond that, we've also got friends and siblings with cats who like to visit sometimes. And now we don't even know if they can visit us anymore, for fear of spreading the virus.
Does anyone know if there's any way to make a house safe after a kitten with Parvo has lived in it a few days? Are we pretty much sunk, or is there any way we can make our house safe enough for another cat? We've learned a lot from this experience and the next cat (whenever that happens) will definitely be pre-vaccinated and bought through a more official channel.
Thanks in advance!
(PS. My wife texted the lady who sold us the kitten and urged her to get all her other cats checked ASAP - the lady was a bit rude and dismissive to her, essentially gave a "Thanks for telling me how to raise my own cats" kind of vibe.)
TL;DR If a kitten with parvo lives in our house for two days, is there any way to make our house safe again for other cats?
