Recently Adopted Cat Seems to Have Separation Anxiety

Hi, I could use a little advice with my recently adopted cat. I adopted him a few days ago from a local animal rescue. He’s about 5 years old, however the rescue didn’t have much information on his previous living situations. They do believe that he was an outdoor cat due to him having frostbite when he was found. He was extremely kept to himself and quiet at the rescue, but when I brought him home he had a completely positive personality shift. He immediately became a cat that follows me everywhere and lays on my lap wherever I am. He’s extremely sweet and probably the least aggressive cat I’ve ever met, but I’ve started to think that he may have some anxiety.

I spent 2 days with him before I decided to leave the house for 20 minutes. I wanted to see his response so I started recording a video on my phone and left it at home. When I got back and watched the video it was 20 minutes full of him crying a yowling. I really want to help him out because I don’t want him to be upset anytime I leave the house. I also live in an apartment with neighbors and a pet policy so I want to avoid noise complaints. I got him plenty of toys and calming collar and I think it helps a little bit.

I should also mention that I have 2 windows on the front of my apartment that he extremely wants to sit it, but I’ve been trying to block it off due to the pet policy. There are only a few tenants and personally I feel like they wouldn’t even pay any mind to the fact that I have a cat, but I’ve been playing it safe. I’m beginning to think that not being able to see outside when I’m gone is stressing him out. His well being is my responsibility so at this point I’m willing to run the risk, but I’ve been trying really hard to come up with ways that he can look out the window and not be as visible from the outside. So if anyone has any experience with separation anxiety and/or discreet window solutions, I’d absolutely love to here it. Thanks!
