2 years ago a co-workers husband found a cute lab mix in a coyote trap. She posted on Facebook several times trying to find the owner and was about to bring her to the pound. I decided I would take her in knowing she had some issues like a cut on her front leg from the trap, if the owners never came forward.
The first vet trip we found out she also had a stick lodged in the roof of her mouth that had to be surgically removed. It was back really far in so we couldn't even see it, as well as getting her leg fixed up. It was more expensive than I anticipated but we were doing a good thing and she is a really sweet dog. Our first dog we rescued as well and they get along really well.
Fast forward 3 months and she started sneezing uncontrollably and blood was coming out. We took her in and found out she has a rare protozoic cyst growth in her nose (I think that's what they called it). It was so rare that no one in our state knew how to treat it and our vet referred us to a specialist who called around the world and received instructions on how to treat it. He cut us a little slack on the cost since she was a rescue but it was still about $5,000+. We are not rich by any means. My stomach was in knots from it.
We decided to go ahead with the surgery and they cut out all of the cysts, and then cauterized them. We thought it was behind us and we had a great dog that would be with us for a long time.
Fast forward to this month. She started having sneeze fits again. The specialist we took her to packed up and moved to another state and they won't give us his information. We looked him up by name and called the new office but it never answers.
Today my wife brought her into a new specialist and they want another $1700 to give her a CT-scan and possibly would have to "break open her nose and clean out all of the infection". We are unable to afford the CT-scan much less that type of procedure, I'm sure would be thousands. We wanted to get her insured but we can't do that as it's an issue prior to insurance coverage.
I certainly don't want to put her to sleep because of it. They said it can grow to her brain though. We've got so much invested in her already and love her to death, that I don't know what else to do. I would be more willing to try and find someone who is capable of paying for her treatments to adopt her, but I wouldn't even know how to start.
If anyone has other options that I haven't thought of I would be grateful.
