Should my friend put her cat down?

My friend’s cat is only 10 months old. A little over a week ago, the cat began getting a runny nose and was less playful than usual. My friend took the cat to the vet twice since she got sick: during the first visit, the doctor gave the cat an allergy shot and during the second visit, he gave the cat an antibiotic shot.

The day the cat got the antibiotic shot, she was having difficulties breathing, but the doctor said to just go home and he will call and check in later. I told my friend she should call the animal hospital and ask for their opinion and they told her to bring the cat in immediately.

It’s been three days and the animal hospital still can’t tell my friend what’s wrong with her cat, they say because the shots the previous doctor gave the cat make it difficult to see what’s wrong. They only can say that there’s an infection in the cat’s lungs and heart, but they don’t even know what kind of infection or where it began. I’ve read online that when an infection spreads to the heart valve(like in this case) that the prognosis is usually death. But the hospital is saying they’re carefully optimistic.

The bill is now at €2,800, while the cat’s condition is still critical and unstable. The poor cat has been kept in an oxygen box the entire time, and has water constantly pumped out of her lungs. My friend is only a student, with a part time job and had to use a friend’s credit card to pay the bill. I have a feeling she’s going to end up with a €5,000+ bill and a dead cat, but I don’t know how to help her.
