Soon to be first time cat owner

Hello Reddit, I'm gonna get a cat soon. I've never had a pet of my own before besides the family dog so I was wondering if you could spare some advice for my situation. I work 7-5 Monday through Friday and live alone in a pretty big 1 bedroom apartment. I'm probably going to get an adolescent or adult shelter cat because I don't want the extra struggles of a kitten. I'm also on the 2nd floor.

  1. Are those hours okay for a cat and if I need to travel, how long can I leave it alone? My job rarely requires travel, but it happens, and I haven't got many friends in the area.
  2. Should I just get 2 cats, preferably a bonded pair, to keep them entertained? Will that be significantly more work if they're already bonded?
  3. Would I need to worry about them jumping on the balcony railing and falling off?
  4. My town requires pets on a leash. Do cats take well enough to leashes?
  5. I love watching cats hunt prey. Is it a bad idea to take them hunting in the woods?
