I wanted to do the right thing and adopt a dog rather than purchase from a puppy mill but I have encountered an issue, unreasonable requirements.
I am a 30 year old home owner (with a nice fenced in yard), have no children, lead a pretty decently active life, and work normal hours (8 on avg.). I have 2 cats currently, great vet record, and history of growing up with many many pets.
My application for 2 different dogs within the same adoption agency was declined because I am away from home too long for how active these dogs are. I even stated that I would have someone walk the dog mid-day. Mind you, one dog was a cockapoo, we’re not talking about a gray hound or a dog that needs to be ran daily...
I could technically take the dog to work with me but I don’t see how that would solve the issue as the dog would have to sit next to me all day. Not like the dog could be running around.
So who meets their criteria? A college student would have the hours but would not qualify based on home ownership and fenced yard. A retiree would have the hours and property but not the energy they claim is required to exercise the dog. A housewife could have all the above criteria but they didn’t want the dogs in a home with kids because they were “too active and mouthy” when they played.
Anyone else ever deal with this? I want to do the right thing and adopt but these people are pushing me towards shopping.
