There are a lot of posts on this subreddit akin to "I found [baby animal, usually a kitten] abandoned and need advice on raising it."
I just wanted to address this issue. From the mouth of my biologist friend, when she went on a rant about this last week:
"YOU"RE NOT SUPPOSED TO PICK UP STRAY KITTENS JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN"T FIND THE MOM THE MOMS WILL LEAVE FOR HOURS AT A TIME AND THEN PEOPLE TAKE THE KITTENS THINKING THEY'RE LOST AND THEN SOMEONE ELSE HAS TO TAKE THE KITTEN WHEN THE MOM WAS JUST GONE FOR A BIT AND NOW IS PROBABLY COMING BACK AND HER KIDS ARE GONE, YOU'RE ONLY SUPPOSED TO MOVE A KITTEN IF IT'S IN SUPER DANGER BECAUSE THEN YOU GOTTA TAKE CARE OF IT WHEN IN MOST CASES THE MOM WAS JUST OUT HUNTING. ONLY IF THE MOM IS GONE FOR /LONG/ TIME DO YOU RESCUE."
If you ever find yourself in a situation where you suspect an animal of any sort has been abandoned, DON'T JUST SCOOP THEM UP. I understand many people are doing this out of good will, but more likely than not you're missing the full picture and are unknowingly stealing a baby from its parents! Unless the animal is in immediate danger, CONTACT YOUR LOCAL ANIMAL CONTROL and inform them about the situation. They have the knowledge and experience necessary to be able to tell whether or not action needs to be taken. At the very least, stick around and wait for their verdict before you snatch up any supposedly abandoned baby animal.
