Adopting my very own cat for the first time, need advice.

I've read all the great advice on getting new kitties and the overwhelming consensus seems to be to get 2 of the same litter and these were certainly my intentions. My boyfriend and I recently when to the shelter to do a little window shopping and were "chosen" by this kitten (~8 weeks old) who immediately took to us with no hesitation. She had no companions, so if I still wanted to get 2, they would have to be from separate litters. Can 2 kittens from separate litters get along/bond just as well as siblings would? Should I try and find 2 from the same litter that I get along just as well with or quit while I am ahead and follow my cat destiny?

Extra information: we have the means and time to take care of 2 cats, our only hold ups at this point were him having never had a cat before, while I have had ~6 growing up. He has fallen to the stigmas surrounding cats and is skeptical of owning two of them, assuming their bold nature will make them too much of a hassle together. I personally have found that owning 2 did not increase and at times, lessen the load of owning a cat, but have found it hard to put this concept into words for him. Any extra advice on the prospect of adopting 1 cat vs 2 would also be helpful!
