I have a 14 year old cat named Snickers whose health is declining. She had been a family cat up until recently when I took responsibility for her after my parents divorced. A little over a month ago I took Snickers to the vet because she was losing weight and not eating. They did a full blood panel and urinalysis and she was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. This cost me $400. They put her on a medication that she needs every 12 hours which isn't the cheapest.
After starting the medication, Snickers was eating a lot and seemed spunkier. However, that only lasted about a week before she went back to not eating. I took her back in today to be retested as they advised and spent another $400. Her levels haven't changed much and she is back to not eating well. The vet recommended an appetite stimulant which I considered buying. Another treatment is surgery but the vet said putting her under anesthesia would be risky because her heart rate is too high.
On top of her thyroid issues, she was also diagnosed with dental disease and tooth resorption. I feel guilty because I know she's in pain but again, putting her under to have these teeth extracted would be a risk. The vet then mentioned that she would also likely need to be tested and treated for high blood pressure.
Then we get to the financial aspect. I'm 23 years old and I'm trying to get my professional license while paying off my student loans. I also have $3,000 worth of debt from vet bills that came from trying to treat my other cat's kidney disease before I ultimately had to put her to sleep. I cannot afford to treat all of Snickers' medical issues. I love her so much and I feel so guilty. I don't want to let her go but I don't want her to be in pain. I'm having a really difficult time. Thank you if you took the time to read this.
