Indoor cats fighting question

We have two indoor only cats. Ty was a 3 month old stray male, we had him neutered as soon as possible. He's around 2 years old now. In September or so last year we took on two young kittens as part of fostering for a local charity. We ended up keeping one of the kittens, a little female as we fell in love with her, her name is Bean. She was spayed around October/November, she was young as well as she was born around July/August.

The pair of them get on really well which is also part of the reason we decided to keep Bean. They cuddle and lick each other and play around the house. In the last month or so they've started killing each other at random times around the house, usually in the evening or at night when we're trying to sleep. Then they'll go back to being best friends. Since the lockdown we've been able watch them all day. I noticed Ty goes to sniff her butt and she freaks out and growls and hisses. Then she gets chased around the house. Today, a few minutes ago the screeching started again and Ty tore tufts of fur out of her! Anyone have any idea why they're killing each other one minute and literally lick each other's faces the next?
