Background info: My almost-13-year-old (spayed, never bore a litter) pit bull / blue heeler mix has started peeing in the house (NOT common for her in her younger years), more specifically in her bed or anywhere soft she can find. Over the last year, she started leaking a little bit, so we got waterproof beds and liners. Over the last few months, she developed a UTI... twice... without any history of UTIs at all (I’ve had her since she was 8 weeks old). They did multiple labs to see if it was kidney disease, but her kidney levels weren’t elevated enough to suggest that. Right before her first UTI was the first time she actually peed (not just leaked in her bed) inside the house on our floor mat in front of the door. Almost immediately after that first sign, she would pee blood. The house accidents stopped after she was treated for the UTI. Last night, however, after being walked for 30-45 minutes, she popped a squat in the middle of our living room and peed. Then again next to / on her bed an hour or 2 later. We let her out after both incidents and again right before we went to bed. There weren’t any signs this morning that she had any accidents and we let her out right away. Maybe an hour later, she got up and peed on her bed. There are no signs of blood in her pee.
Like I said earlier, after she first started leaking, we got waterproof dog beds and also lined them with pee pads. We’ve been letting our girls out much more frequently to avoid them holding their pee for long. I’m constantly washing their bedding...
I’m reaching out to the world of Reddit to see if anyone has been in the same situation and/or has any words of advise. Between the 1st and 2nd UTI and all the doctor visits, we’ve spend over $1,000 and we just can’t afford to keep taking her to the vet every time she has an accident.... Before anyone suggests it, no, we’re not going to put her down. I just want to be able to make her as comfortable as possible for the time that we have left with her.
