I have two cats, Wyzrd and Sage. Sage is Wyzrd's mother. They have eaten dry Rachel Ray food for most of their life.
About a year ago Wyzrd had urinary stones and had to have emergency surgery. They prescribed him Urinary SO dry food.
Several months later, he began puking a lot and when he started limping I got him to a vet and after some tests they determined he had diabetes.
I researched diabetes in cats and found that it is often linked to a diet that is too high in carbs, and dry food in general, which is also a cause of the urinary issues he'd had.
I looked at the prescribed food and realized it was utter crap, mostly carbs, and just generally not good at all for him. I also learned about how dry food is just generally not good for cats, and that both diabetes and urinary issues are extremely rare among wet-fed cats.
I started feeding them exclusively Fancy Feast wet food. After about a month of this diet, Wyzrd's diabetes was determined to be in remission.
Currently he is doing well, regulating his own blood sugar, and likes the food, but it is costing me about $100 a month. I am just wondering if there is any option out there that is low to no carbs and will be just as good for preventing his diabetes. I will obviously keep him on this food if it is the best option, but I'd like to save some money if possible. I don't want to risk his diabetes returning though.
If anyone has any food advice I'd appreciate it. Thanks
