My girlfriend and I adopted a kitten recently from a family. She's just a few months old.
We've literally had her for not even a week and she is a little terror. I know it's normal for kittens to want to chew on hands and we discourage her from it but she will just immediately come back and pounce hard at our legs, hands, and our hair (essentially attacking our face in the process).
I read that you're not supposed to say no or ouch or anything but just to move away from the kitten and give her a toy to teach her to play with that instead, and we do that, but she won't have any interest in the toy and go back to pouncing on us even if we walk away. We have never encouraged her to play with our hands or body parts and I wonder if she learned this from her last home.
It's gotten so bad that in the daytime she'll pounce on us so we can't even relax. I try to play with her with toys but she quickly gets bored of toys and wants to play with our body parts like I said. Then at night it's even worse and she attacks us when we sleep. We haven't gotten a wink of sleep since we got her.
My girlfriend has started giving her "timeouts" where she locks the kitten in our bedroom (with the kitten's litter box, food, water, toys etc) to try to show the kitten when behavior she does is not ok. She said she read somewhere that this works. Is this ok? Or is it cruel and bad for the kitten? She only does it for like 10-20 minutes. I don't even know if it'll help teach her anything or actually be bad for her.
We had a cat before this that we raised from adulthood but that cat NEVER acted like this. I know cats are all different and she is a playful kitten but I can't stand another 6 months or more of this behavior everyday.
Can anyone give some advice on how to tame her? I know kittens want to play but she's bored of all toys and seems to only want to chew and gnaw on US.
It seems like she's not learning that she shouldn't do it and I don't want her to grow up to still be chomping and pouncing on us as a full grown cat.
