My Cat Eats WAY Too Much

Hey guys! A couple of months ago, my husband and I adopted an adult cat from a local shelter. He's roughly 3 years old and they said he was living on the street for quite some time before they got him. He's honestly an amazing cat! Very affectionate and playful -- just a joy to have in our house! However, he is constantly begging for food. He has figured out how to open our cabinets that we keep the pet food in and has even broken into bags from time to time. We also have a small, older dog who gets food twice a day, but grazes quite a lot so that he has some to go back to throughout the day. Our cat is constantly trying to eat the dog food! Not sure what to do at this point. He's extremely smart and the only thing that has worked is literally barricading the cabinet with a chair from our dining set until we're ready to feed them. Is this something I'm doing or is it normal for formerly stray cats? Do y'all have any advice?
