My elderly cat is dying and I'm trying to figure out how to make him most comfortable.

My cat is 16 years old with severe arthritis and kidney disease. He is on a special diet to help with his kidney disease but mo matter how many different types of kidney food he tries, he just can't stomach the stuff. He has a hard time eating and has lost a lot of weight. He also isn't on pain medication for his arthritis because that tends to do damage to the kidneys..

But I want to know when enough is enough... when do I just start giving him the food he likes and when can I just straight up ask for the pain meds to help ease his joints. I want his final years to be comfortable... not medicated, hungry, and painful.
