My new cat attacked me

Hello all. I adopted a 1 year old Siamese cat exactly 3 weeks ago. They told me he wasn’t good with kids and was scared of other pets/cats so he needed a quiet environment. Perfect fit so I thought. When I met him in the petsmart he rubbed against me, requested rubs and wanted to be petted but after a while walked away and sat on the other side of the cage. I came to see him 2 days in a row before I brought him home. I live in a decent sized apartment. 1 bedroom no roommates or other people/pets.

Once I got him home he immediately left the carrier and hid behind the couch. I gave him some treats and a catnip toy and left him alone to adjust. The next day he moved and hid behind the refrigerator. I know now that I should’ve kept him in a small room to adjust but I didn’t want to put his litterbox in my room, so I figured the living room was next best. It has now been 3 weeks and I have only seen him once. He only eats and uses the litterbox when he thinks I’m sleep. If he hears any noise he immediately runs back to under the fridge.

Just now I heard him in his litterbox and took that as an opportunity to approach him. I grabbed a handful of treats and sat on the floor blocking the kitchen off with my hand extended with the treats. I spoke soothingly to him and offered the treats. He immediately backed away, surveyed the area and tried to squeeze by me to get to the fridge. Because I didn’t move fast enough to get out of the way he attacked me and left 6 scratches (2 of which are still bleeding).

I don’t know what else to do. I gave him his space but it doesn’t seem like he is acclimating. It’s literally just me and I spend 80% of my time in my bedroom. I used to keep his food and water in my room in an effort to get him to explore (he would eat sometimes but only if I was sleep) but it got to the point where I felt he was going too long without food/water because he’s trying to avoid me so I moved it to the living room. I’d rather him eat and avoid me than not eat just to not have to risk being around me.

Idk what to do. I’ve been crying the last half hour because I literally don’t know how to help him. I can’t even get to him if I wanted when he’s behind the fridge. What am I supposed to do? I don’t want to be one of those people who quickly gives up on a pet because they’re not behaving the way i want. Advice?
