People who work at animal shelters and have to euthanize animals: What do they get out of it?

Don't get me wrong. All respect for them. As a proud cat owner and animal lover in general, I am glad these people do what they do.

My question is why. It sounds like a heartbreaking role. Most of the animals don't get adopted and have to be euthanized. The euthanization process depending on the facility and budgetary issues can also be brutal. Not the careful euthanization that happens at the vet but cheap ones that are cost effective.

Also, to my knowledge, the job doesn't pay that well and some are even volunteer-based.
