So, during the recent storms a couple weeks ago, I took in a stray male I had been feeding.
He is a sweet cat with humans for the most part (see below), and seems to want to befriend my two (fixed) female cats, but he also randomly attacks them. He is probably around 11 months and much bigger than them, even though they are 2-3 years old.
I have been keeping them separated because I will be eventually sending him on a trial basis to live with my friend, who has the space and time for him. For now, I live far from her and am waiting until about two weeks after he gets neutered to make the transition.
My vet has been backed up and can't take him gor neutering until the 3rd.
Everyday it seems like his behavior gets worse. He excessively howls all day, but specifically around 3a-6a (peak play time?). He has scratched up my carpet to the room he is in pretty badly at the doorframe. I have softcaps on him, but he keeps getting 1-2 off at a time and immediately resumes scratching. He has begun to have random fits of aggression towards me with biting, though he is generally affectionate and kind. Last night, he even started spraying. I feel like I'm going crazy trying to take care of him, my two other cats, and my other job and life responsibilities. It doesn't help I haven't had a full night's sleep in over a week.
What I have tried/am currently using:
- Wearing him out with play. Only delays the behavior from 3-5a to 5a-7a
-Feliway spray for about a week now. I'm not sure if it is working.
-I put my two girls away and let him roam the home with me for a good chunk of the day. Has made no difference.
-Melatonin treats. Helps a little, but again only delays the behavior.
-Soothing, petting him and leaving after he is calm. Inconsistent results.
-Rotating toys available. Food and water available. No help.
It's 5 more days, but I am going a little crazy here waiting and don't know what to do to allow myself and him a peaceful night. Any advice would be nice.
