My cat is 3 years old and we’ve had him since he was a kitten. Today I wondered why he doesn’t like to play with cat toys anymore like he used to when he was a baby and stress showed up as a possible reason when i was researching. How can I tell if he’s stressed? He seems pretty healthy, he’s friendly to me and always purring kneading, head butting etc which is normal cat behaviour, he’s about as affectionate as a normal cat would be and doesn’t like strangers. Sometimes when he doesn’t want to be pet anymore or wants to play he starts to bite, nothing that would properly break the skin but it can be quite painful regardless, it usually leaves a little red cut after he bites and i try to get him to stop doing it but he wont. He’s been doing this since he was a kitten because despite my warnings some of my family members used their hands to play with him. I am wondering if leaving a small cut may be because he is angry or stressed rather than playful? He does have an interest in playing it seems, just not with his toys anymore. He usually goes outside to play with other cats catch mice and run around et cetera so perhaps that’s why toys aren’t as interesting to him anymore. He’s also been pooping outside ever since he started going outside and rarely uses his litter box.
He doesn’t scratch furniture necessarily but he does dig his claws into it to stretch which often damages the furniture. He also meows a lot, when he wants food or wants to go out & especially when it’s 4am and he wants to be let into my room. He sleeps all through the day sometimes but usually becomes active at night which also just seems like regular cat behaviour to me, but i feel like he may be sleeping slightly more than other cats so it’s hard to say. He sometimes hides under my bed but this is pretty rare, usually when he knows i’m going to pick him up and put him outside or he hears the vacuum cleaner. I get the feeling he just likes it because it’s dark under there though? I’ve heard signs of stress can be very subtle and can seem like normal cat behaviour though, hence why i’m worried. I’m not sure what exactly would make him stressed, all that comes to mind is that there’s one particular family member who he doesn’t like at all and he runs away whenever they approach, but that family member stays out of his way for the most part.
