Adopting a female puppy, concerns in the long run.

Hi! I live with a 5-year-old male dog and two small 2-year-old female cats in a condo, it is big enough with plenty of rooms to explore during the day. My concern is not about the house getting full...

I was thinking of adopting a female puppy since puppies are easier to adapt to in a house with other pets. But I am worried about the long run. If I adopt a female puppy, she is going to, most likely, become my 5-year-old dog's best friend. Since he is a medium-size (around 14kg), it is very possible that he will die of old age in about 7 to 9 years, if nothing else happens before.

As much as dogs suffer from losing a companion, I feel that a puppy that grew with an older dog would morn it for more time than a dog with a similar age (which would be closer to death when his companion dies).

And, although things could change, I don't see myself adopting another dog after my 5-year-old dies, so this new puppy would be "alone" (dog-wise) after years of living with her companion.

I would love to hear some thoughts about this matter before making a decision.

Thanks!
