My boyfriend and I live together with our cat who is somewhere between 9-11 (he was a stray) and our dog who is just over 8 months in a one bedroom apartment that we moved into almost 3 months ago.
We’ve moved twice with him. Once out of my boyfriends parents. They had 4 other cats. His behavior in that house was always great. He has tendency to scratch things he shouldn’t but other than that he was always the most friendly cat. He never scratched, bit or hissed at anyone. When we moved, we moved into a place we rented with a friend who also had a cat. He was still the friendliest cat. He likes to be held, cuddled and will seek out attention from anyone. When people walk in the door, no matter how many times they’ve been to our place, he was always the first to greet them.
Recently, his behavior has changed. He has always been a little clingy, but now it is next level. When I try to take him off of me so I can get up, I get bit or scratched. He’s begun attacking the dog when the dog goes near his cat tree, my boyfriend or myself. I’ve always sensed a little bit of jealousy between the dog and the cat as they are both clingers but usually they can coexist peacefully. I also just had to take 3 weeks off of work due to a surgery and I’m not sure if they’ve both just gotten more territorial since I’m home all the time.
I’m not sure if once I return to work if things will go back to the way they were, or if these are just signs of loneliness setting in. If it’s a jealous, territorial thing I don’t think getting another cat would solve the issue. He was never like this when other cats were around. I just need thoughts and opinions and if you have suggestions as to how to fix this without getting another cat, please let me know. Thank you!
