Alright y’all. My partner is moving in next month with her 16 year old, 7lb, declawed cat (I know, it was the early 2000’s and she didn’t know any better) to join me and my 2 year old, 78lb dog (he is a Husky / Pyrenees / Boxer mix).
We know getting our pets to peacefully co-habitate together is going to be a challenge, and is going to take work and patience. Her cat is very sweet, rather old and really just enjoying her golden years. My dog is also sweet, loves people, other dogs etc, but he gets very worked up around cats. We have briefly introduced them before, she kind of pays him no mind, whereas he whines, cries, yelps, paws at her, would chase if he had the opportunity, and does not break eye contact with her.
What are some things we can do to ease this transition? We are in an apartment, and I have a gate set up on one half that my dog hangs out in during the day when I am at work (I have a dog Walker and he goes to daycare one day a week. I’ve brought some things over from my partners house that smell like cat so he can get used to her scent around. The last time we introduced them in the same room I had my dog on lead.
When I rescued my dog 2 years ago they said he was good with cats, however it didn’t work out very well when my roommate’s cat was living with us (I was a new dog owner, and frankly that cat was a nightmare). However I really want to make sure I don’t drop the ball this time. Every dog trainer I’ve reached out to is booked out sooo far due to quarantine pets, so kind people of Reddit please throw me a bone! Thanks!
