I live in an apartment and work a 9-5 job, should I not own a cat?

My apartment is fairly small and I've been thinking of adopting a cat.

I would be out of the house Monday-Friday every day at my full time job.

There would be no one else at home at all, so the cat would be left alone for this time every day during the week.

I don't want to own a pet if it would be morally "unfair" to them to leave them alone so much. I would rather a dog but I realise that this is a very bad idea if I'm leaving them alone for all this time in a small apartment.

Thoughts?
