Hi, im just looking on here for some honest, sensible and rational advice. We have two aging male cats (13 yo). We adopted both of them, a year in-between and succefully introduced them to each other (patience, scent swapping, lots of treats and time!) and they now live harmoniously together. For context, we have Paul, a domestic longhair and Mushroom, a persian. They're both super chill and affectionate. Its just me and my partner who live at home. Now heres the dilemma, a relative's labrador is due to have a litter imminently, and we've been offered a puppy. We love all animals and would adore a puppy but are very hesitant about upsetting our cats. Back to the cats, for some more context. Mushroom was rehomed due to his family having a baby, he was so distressed by a child being in the house that he became an outside cat. There was once an occasion where another cat came into our garden and he became very territorial and growly. On the other hand, Paul was super inquisitive and gave this cat a head boop! We've also recently asked a friend to bring their dog to our garden to test the cat's reactions (this dog lives with another cat and is unphased by them). Paul was very frightened but also very curious. Mushroom got territorial and growly. I'm really on the fence about introducing a puppy to the household, 50% of me thinks if we get it right, take it slow( I've done lots of research into this, also I know Labs are super friendly and love everyone, including cats!), it'll work out fine, the other 50% of me is very concerned that Mushroom will be very distressed and become an outside cat.
What are people's thoughts on this?
