To paraphrase Jane Eyre...“Reader, I adopted him”
Last week I reached out to the community asking for advice about adopting a “difficult dog”. I ended up adopting him, and I’ve spent the last few days helping him transition and reading all of the helpful resources and advice I’ve gotten from this community.
I am so beyond happy. I went back to the shelter three times as suggested, and each time he built more trust. I also asked the staff for more details and they read me his entire history on file. It ended being much more manageable than I originally thought. I think the initial staff member might have told me most of the information from memory.
Anyway, he’s actually an incredibly well behaved dog overall. As expected, he is a bit skittish and distrustful of strangers. We haven’t had many people around, but I’m going to slowly work on socialization. I’m looking forward to starting obedience classes, because I think he’ll redone well. In the meantime he seems to respond well to positive affirmations, treats, and lots of stability. I get the sense he may have been yelled at a lot by the prior owner and maybe lived in an apartment? He seems to be able to pee whenever I suggest it.
He loves living in the country and running around outside. I’ve been taking him outside for playtime 2-3 times a day, which has been great for my mental health too. He’s doing well with my grandpa, but he’s just a bit scared of his walker. Overall, grandpa seems really happy too.
Thank you so much to everyone who responded to my original post. All of the advice, stories, and tough questions really helped. Honestly, I don’t know if I would have had the confidence to adopt him if I hadn’t the help and you’ve really changed my life. Thanks!
