Am I responsible for damages done by pet while pet sitting at their house

Last week, I ended up pet sitting for my cousin. I stopped by twice a day, took care of a few animals, including a rabbit, for 8 days. The care instructions for the rabbit was to let it run around the bedroom for at least 30 minutes a day. I didn’t notice it chewing on anything, but apparently it had gotten ahold of a shoe and a cord that wasn’t plugged in. Do I need to pay for the damages? I feel bad that I didn’t notice it, but I had to clean out the cage twice, and it probably got to the items while I was busy doing that.

I wasn’t sitting for money, even though he gave me like $35 for the week, just enough to cover the gas to drive over. I wanted him to be able to get out of town for a much needed vacation. I just don’t know if I’m being rude/irresponsible by not replacing the items.
