I have a 4 year old adult cat. Today I brought home a 3mo kitten and immediately locked him in my room set up as his base. Our cat woke up from his nap and greeted me. This was when kitten started crying in my room and our cat got MAD. He growled, hissed, and screamed (never heard him do this before) at the kitten through the crack under the door. After two or three minutes of anger, the cat walked to his usual hiding spot (underneath the bed in another room) and refused to come out since. It has been about 8 hours.
Our adult cat has a history of getting along well with new kittens. He coexisted with two other cats really well and is in general a fantastic cat. However, a couple moves and getting older, he’s gotten more skittish and resistant to change. He is a very routine-oriented cat and has been an only cat for about a year now.
I read that when introducing a new kitten, you must separate them so they get used to their new scents before meeting face-to-face. How will our adult cat get used to the kitten’s scent if he stays hidden at the opposite end of the house and refuses to come out!! I have ordered a pheromone diffuser but it will take several days. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
