Cat Hygiene and Apartment?

hi folks! i really want to get a cat, but i am quite particular about cleanliness in my apartment. mainly, the thought of having a cat potentially walking in its own waste in the litter box, and then later trotting around the apartment (and jumping on counters) leaves me a bit unsettled. what are the best ways to maximise hygiene in your home when having a cat? i thought having a self-cleaning litter box would be good, as well as having plenty of trees and scratching posts for the cat to jump on. wiping counters before cooking and regularly mopping floors is a given.

i am normally a dog person, and i believe they are easier to clean in the sense of wiping their feet down when coming inside or simply bathing them.
