I live with my girlfriend and we have a 1 year old domestic cat. I'm a cop and she's an ER nurse, so we have erratic schedules. When one of us is home and awake and paying attention to him, he's content, but when no one is playing with him he meows incessantly at the bedroom door. Sometimes I'm out and she's asleep and he meows and wakes her up in the morning. Sometimes she's out and I'm at home napping in the afternoon and he'll meow at the door and wake me up.
We have ignored him and it won't stop. He'll meow for an hour, give up for 30 minutes, and then resume meowing for and hour, etc, nonstop. We're both exhausted now. We can't leave the bedroom door open or he'll wake us up and he's actually seriously interfering with our sleep and having a very substantial impact on our quality of life. I've had 3 cats before and none of them did this, I didn't realize this was a problem. The internet says ignore him and he'll stop, but it's been 6 months and he isn't stopping.
At this point I'm ready to give him to a shelter. I really love the little guy, but he's affecting my work performance. I'm constantly exhausted and so is my gf and neither of us can afford to be in that state for work.
What can we do? I've thought of keeping him in the bathroom at night, which is where is litter is. Is that cruel? Ignoring him is NOT working. It's been 6 months of ignoring him. I need another solution.
