I have a 10 year-old cat who was rescued, facing salivary gland issues causing him to drool excessively. His salivary gland and the area under his tongue is swollen, causing him discomfort while eating hence under-eating. I’ve brought my baby to the vet and was told that I could either opt for finding out what’s the main cause (could be a cyst or even cancer) and going through surgery for the salivary gland OR try antibiotics + extract the fluid in the swollen area and hope that it goes away. I went with the latter however nothing seems to improve. My boy went from being a chonky baby weighing at 5kg to 3.8kg.
On the recent vet visit, I was told by the vet that the only options were to send him for surgery because if not, he’ll eventually die from not getting enough nutrients as he’s not eating well. I was previously told it would cost $1k+ which was initially a lot for me because I just used all my savings to paying the vet bill about a year ago for the same cat as he had urinary issues. Later, I was told that the surgery and treatment could go up to $5.5k as CT scan in itself would cost about $2.5k and the surgery would cost around $3k, this is excluding hospitalisation fees etc. In the meantime during this vet visit, he was given fluids as he was dehydrated.
I feel so hopeless and distraught as I’m essentially watching my bestfriend slowly die. I’m still going to bring him to the hospital for the check up because that’s the only thing I’m able to afford at the moment but I don’t think I could go through with the surgery as I can’t afford it. I was told that they accept instalment payments through credit card however I do not own one as I’m a fresh graduate struggling in this pandemic.
Have any of your beloved cat went through this salivary gland issue and if so, how did you go about in treating it? In the meantime, do any of you have advice on how I can keep him well fed? He seems uninterested in the food I got and I’ve even bought a mini blender to blend his food in hopes to syringe feed him but he prefers eating those liquid treats that come in a tube.
The thought of losing him pains me as he is my first ever pet cat that came into my life unexpectedly when I found him abandoned in my neighbourhood 9 years ago, eating nothing but grass.
I would appreciate any advice or even prayers to bring him back to good health. Thank you in advance!
