I posted here a few weeks ago with a question about getting a new cat (or kitten) with an existing 11-month old cat already in the family. I'm afraid they wouldn't get along and I'd have to return or rehome the new kitty. A bunch of people suggested fostering, which sounded great to me! So once I got final approval from my property manager to get a second cat, I contacted all the local shelters and asked about their fostering programs. Well, bad news. Nobody's really doing that in my area, with the exception of one shelter (already 50 miles away) which has a program for fostering very sick cats which wouldn't get adopted out otherwise. Not exactly what I'm looking for, unfortunately. I'm in a really small state (Vermont) and there's not a lot around.
So what would you, r/pets, recommend now? I have to say I have some nerves about the whole thing now that it doesn't look like fostering is an option - I really don't want to make my kitty unhappy. I've watched all the Jackson Galaxy videos on introducing cats and one of the shelters I contacted told me they could help walk me through the process of a slow introduction, too, but it just feels like such a permanent decision with fostering off the table. What if it all went awry?
That said, I really think it could be a beautiful thing for me and for my kitten and for the NEW kitten if it went well, so it's really something I'd love to do at the same time. Bringing a new little life into ours would be such a great thing for us and I think it would be great for Otter to have a new buddy.
HELP!
