Hi folks, my cat has entropion so basically his eyelid curls inwards and fur rubs his eyeball. It doesn't feel amazing of course. He's developing an ulcer. I've paid $500 in tests, medications, and preop bloodwork which is a steal. My vet is lovely. There is a surgery to correct this issue, but it's a pretty hefty cost, only being done by a specialist around here. There's a chance it could return and I don't know if I could manage a second time if it did.
Which brings me to the other option - I need to discuss with my vet, but I have considered enucleation (eyeball removal) instead as it's way cheaper. Hundreds instead of thousands. I am a uni student and not rich - I have pet savings but he's a "problem cat" historically. But young, healthy, and my best friend in the world. I'm dealing with a lot of other things all at once. This seems like an even lower risk surgery with easier recovery and no chance of it coming back, and my other cheaper (but still fantastic) vet could do it. Cats adapt well to one-eyed life and he's totally indoors and safe all the time so I really don't think he'd suffer for it.
I just feel like a piece of shit for considering not saving his eye when I could, and just leave myself in a much more precarious financial spot. To be clear I'm still just debating. Opinions?
