I fright my cat sometimes

As a man who grow up in dysfunctional family and never learned good physical boundaries, I sometimes act compulsive (almost abusively) with my cat (and humans, but this a whole other subject). In example today I got him a new water fountain and after assembling it up I was very excited to see him drink from it. He seemed to be curious of the new item but also careful, I know cats don't like new stuff so that might be why. I may have been too excited, I dragged him near it in hope he will understand there is nothing to fear from. the result was a very anxious and frightend cat.

He ran under the sofa and refused to get out, even after I gave some sausage in a symbol of peace.

I regret my behavior deeply, but curious to know if what I discribe is normal human-cat relationship, even similar to parent-child . Are conflicts where one side gets mad on the other happens often?

I want to clarify that now everything is water under the bridge, at this moment he lays beside me. All in all I feel like we have a good relationship with each other. Our bond is relatively short, my mother adopted him a few months ago, but unfortunately never took care of him as needed, so I took charge of him and eventually grew to like him so much.
