Looking for experiences about where to get a cat (mainly)

Sorry if this is in the wrong subreddit. Me and my partner are planning to get a cat and a dog and I've been thinking on how to go about it, especially with the cat.

I'm not from the US and in my country there are very few shelters and they are usually low on animals and we don't really have any street dogs/cats. So most animals are sold by breeders.

While looking to buy a cat I noticed there's a lot of hobby breeders that just didn't bother spayed/neutering their cat and just have mixed kittens, either two mixed breeds or just no specific breed. They are significantly cheaper but I just feel bad buying from those people because they seem irresponsible but at the same time I feel like a lot of cat breeds are very expensive, especially if the breed is rare. But I understand it costs a lot of money for the breeder to bring those up, but how do you know if something is overpriced?

Me and my partner decided to get pets when we're more financially stable and he feels it's just waste of money to get a purebred cat because a cat is a cat.

I feel puzzled on this topic. What do you all think about it?
