More than just helping him calm down, I'm actually not sure what is happening when he has these "episodes" he's been having. I haven't found any answers online or from multiple vets that he's seen.
If anyone can recommend someone else I should talk to / a better place to post this, please let me know.
In December it happened for the first time. I was walking him everything was normal, and then all of a sudden he started SPRINTING for his life, while scream barking without taking a break or slowing down for about half an hour, I could not console, or get him to even pay attention to me. When I tried to pick him up he would try to scramble out of my arms while still screaming. I took him to the emergency vet and they said he had a fever and the beginning of pneumonia. I don't think they grasped how he was acting he was tuckered out when they finally saw him. They said maybe it's a neurological thing but they didn't really give us any answers. He took the medicine they prescribed and the pneumonia went away.
Well, today my sister was walking him, and the same thing happened again and she called me to tell me. Except its hot and humid out now so I ran and found them and my dog was having trouble breathing because he's old and he was doing his crazy sprinting in the heat. :( So I carried him home and tried to give him water and put ice on his body and he would not calm down or respond to us, and his breathing was scary. His eyes were open super wide and his tongue was completely extended so we took him to the emergency vet again. By the time they saw him he was relatively calm but still panting and barking. They put him on oxygen, and we told them he was acting crazed and we don't know why. They did some x-rays again because we told them the last time he did this he had a fever and the start of pneumonia, and they said his lungs looked fine. His bloodwork was also fine. So we just took him home. And now is about 8 hours later, and he just had a barking fit for no reason, without the running I think because he's tired. It's super scary that I don't know what to do when this happens. If anyone has any clue as to what this could be, (maybe dementia? hallucinations?) or what type of vet I should take him to, (he's seen 2 emergency vets and his normal vet about this) or tests we should have done, please let me know. Thank you!
