Hi I am in a weird situation. My roommate brought one of her friends cat to stay at our apartment because the owner was evicted and had to move in with her bf with dogs. The dogs and cat did not get along. The owner gave the cat to my roommate without essential items such as food, a litter box, etc... on top of that my roommate says her friend threw all her cat stuff away....The first three days of this new cat being in my apartment I noticed my roommate was not feeding her or providing a litter box for her. She was going hungry and even peed all over herself. I saw this and immediately took action. I gave her a bath and found some food for her. I was upset and shocked by seeing this level of neglect by not only the owner who had not once came to see or ask about her but also my roommate. I texted my roommate and told her about how she was hungry and hadn't been fed and had peed all over herself. My roommate said she doesn't have time to look after a living thing right now and that the owner is trying to find another person. My thought process going into this next decision leaned on the fact that I was now invested in this animals quality of life and if the owners first choice was to have my roommate look after her then the choices may only get worse. So I offered to take care of her. Her friend agreed and now I have been trying to contact her for days now to figure out a plan. She only texts me and they are vague things such as , "a family member just died so idk if I will be able to pay you back the money". Of course I feel sorry for her loss but she has been completely neglecting her cat and so I tried to tell her to call me for the second time. It has been all day and no call or response. This whole incident has spanned almost 2 weeks now. I feel the owner is not fit to have a pet and I'm concerned for the animals life if I were to give it back to her. She hasn't even asked me how she is doing. If any of you have some advice for this situation I would appreciate it. Because I'm tempted to rehome her if this continues.
