Parents lock our cat in the basement.

Back in April my parents got me a cat since I was struggling with a lot of mental health problems and they wanted me to have a companion. His name is Hunter and he is honestly the sweetest animal ever. He been super friendly to everyone he’s met, loves to play, cuddle, and lick you. He has helped me so much in my life and I’ve become attached which is why I never considered giving him away before, but if that is the absolute only way to give him a better life, then I’d do it no matter how hard it was on me.

When we first got him he quickly started to climb furniture and occasionally scratch and now my parents have resorted to locking him in the basement (day and night). When we first got him they tried to work around his habits, but a few days ago my mom said she was done making adjustments for him and thus decided to lock him down there. Our basement is full of clutter, is dark, cold and unfinished which I definitely don’t believe is any place for an animal to have to live. Our dog spends most of her time down their as well and she has been aggressive in the past which definitely creates worries that she may try to attack the cat when they’re alone. My parents totally didn’t realize what they were getting themselves into getting a cat. They wanted the animal to cuddle and play but didn’t want to deal with the harder parts, such as natural scratching and climbing that most cats do. He obviously doesn’t do these things more than any other cat would, but my parents think it’s just him. Maybe it’s partially my fault for not warning them before about what they were getting themselves into, but I was just selfishly excited about the idea of getting a new animal.

Anyways, what should I do? This feels so wrong to me and I can’t let my kitten live like this? My parents are stubborn and won’t listen to me. Every time I try to plead with my mom to let him roam (she was the one who made the decision) she ends up yelling and saying it’s not up for discussion. The only way he is allowed out of the basement is if he stays in my room with my 100% full attention and supervision. So basically I haven’t left my room in 3 days to help him but I know I can’t do this forever. Please help, I’m so desperate.
