I introduced the two kitties starting a month ago, using the Jackson Galaxy method (separation, smell exchange, eating either side of a visual barrier, then eating either side of a barrier that allows them to see each other). New Cat is a 2yr old neutered male, and has been curious and non-aggressive to Old Cat since the beginning. Old Cat is a 3yr old neutered female and has been sad and nervous all the way through, to greater or lesser degrees.
They have both been roaming the apartment with no barriers for about a week. This is after a few days in which they ate less than a metre apart with a barrier in between (but they could see each other) with no problem.
Old Cat seems calm but wary of New Cat most of the time, but any time he comes too close or she happens across him by surprise, she will hiss and/or growl and/or make sad mews. New Cat responds submissively (retreating, making himself small) but doesn’t seem particularly afraid. There’s never any bushy tails or flattened ears, and she has never attempted to attack him.
I was wondering if this is a normal adjustment period or if I should be doing anything different.
I’m still feeding them close together and giving them treats when they are close to each other but not hissing/growling. I’m spending quality time with each of them separately, stroking and playing.
