Recently my bf's mom got a puppy, he's a Border Collie and will be 9 weeks this Thursday. The puppy came from some sort of "passionate hobby breeder", personally I was against that because they do not test for illnesses and such, and while there are more reasons, she wouldn't listen to them. They were able to see the area they lived in and the parents seemed healthy so I guess she wasn't worried about it.
Well, the puppy arrived here at 8 weeks old, and I came over to visit a few days after. I knew going in that they would probably bite and scratch you and have tons of energy besides being a cute dog, but oh boy it was way worse than that. He'll try and bite everything and anything that will fit in his mouth, and he will bite very painfully too. Every time he bites me I say a loud "OW!" and either redirect him to a toy or remove myself from the situation. He's a very fast learner and is almost potty trained in two days! I do not have any experience with puppies, only adult dogs, but I was very impressed. His biting however has not stopped or reduced at all, and it's getting very painful and starting to upset me. I can't sit in the sofa or anywhere in peace without him trying to painfully bite me. Oddly enough he doesn't seem to do that with my bf as much, but he does seem to take a liking towards women more than men.
I suspect that this is because the litter was separated frol the mom way too early at 4-5 weeks old, and some of the puppies were already leaving to their owners starting 7weeks and one day old. According to google this is way too early and he hasn't learned vital things including how to bite. I guess there isn't much to do about that now, and I'm not even sure why I'm making this post, I just needed to vent. I feel like I'm starting to resent this puppy while it isn't really his fault, but I get overwhelmed easily and it's just getting too much. I can't even spend time with my bf now because he has to watch the dog while everyone else is at work and I'm trying to avoid the dog for my own mental health.
What are your thoughts on this? Is this normal puppy behaviour? Is there anything that I can do? He is sort of bench trained where he'll sleep and be in there when nobody's home. Is timeout for dogs a thing and would it help?
