1 month after spaying, kitty has scar tissue on her colon and needs surgery. Does this mean my vet was negligent?

Hello! First Reddit post, and I’m looking for some advice.

Our kitty is roughly 2.5 years old, and we got her spayed a few weeks ago. We took her in, picked her up and was told everything went fine etc etc. The incision healed great and she was acting normal.

Fast forward a couple of weeks later, she didn’t seem herself. Wasn’t eating or drinking, trembling and kept hiding in her hidey holes (which is weird as she’s the biggest attention seeker). Got really worried so called the vet and took her straight in, and she said it felt like poo in her intestines and that she’s probably constipated. Took her to an animal hospital to get an ultrasound & blood tests, was told it looked like poo.. so she got given anti sickness meds so that she’d eat and drink and was told to keep an eye on her.

She pooped the tiniest amount that evening and she was acting fine. Thought we were out of the woods, but 2 full days later, still no proper poo.

Took her back to the vets and she got filled with laxatives and was told that should do the trick but takes a full day to kick in. 2 days later. Still no poo. By this time she was in proper pain, crying, shaking, she wanted to go and squeezed so hard but nothing. Her legs were kicking out from under her when trying to go. So took her to the emergency vets at midnight. There the vet said that worse case scenario there could be an adhesion in her colon from the spaying and to take her to our vets in the morning for an X-ray.

Took her to the vets where they did the X-ray and found that the poo was backed up in an unusual part of her tract. They managed to remove the mass of poo with a hot enema under general anaesthesia. However… They say that it is probably an adhesion (the worse case scenario) and they’ll need to do exploratory surgery and possibly remove part of her colon. For now she’s on a constant dose of lactulose to keep everything soft enough to pass through the narrow area.

Right, thanks for reading this far! Is this a common complication with spaying? Or has the surgeon made a mistake? I stupidly didn’t get her insured (absolutely beating myself up about it), I’ve already spent close to £800 with these appointments and been told that surgery can be several thousands. I love my kitty so much and will do anything for her but I don’t know whether I’ll have the money to pay for this surgery she needs! And on another note, why should I pay to fix their mistake?

Can I ask the vet to do it for free if there was a mistake? They can’t lie to me right?

I’m so worried about her. She’s up to her eyes in laxatives at the minute to keep the poo going through, but can’t believe she has to have risky major surgery after such a routine operation. Thoughts or any similar scenarios?
