After having a cat for 2 years and saving one from a tree recently, we moved to an apartment and also took the dog. It is not going well

Hi, this is more of a rant. As the title says - we have a cat with us for a little over 2 years now. She (Muffin) is very anxious with new people and pets and needs time to get accustomed to.

4 weeks ago while we were still living in a house with a garden, we saw my gf’s 10 year old Cocker Spaniel (name: Puppy) leaning against the tree looking at something. It was a kitten, terrified of the dog. She was in no immediate danger, but the neighborhood being full of dogs that are not friendly towards cats was probably a death sentence. So we took her in. We decided we’ll call her Biscuit (because she is always “making biscuits” on pillows).

The house where we were staying is of my gf parents. They decided to let us stay for a few months as they recently bought another one and were planning to sell this one in a few months. The time move has come, so my gf insisted we take the dog with us, because he is cat friendly, as in he wont ever hurt them. And that we will figure it out. Muffin was already seemingly getting a little more comfortable with Puppy, as whenever the door was opened Puppy would rush into her face excited. From hissing and raising her hair every time, she just started tolerating that.

We moved in and the cats got accustomed to the apartment pretty fast, two days later we take Puppy to the vet and gets washed and trimmed. Now the same day we arrived with him at the apartment, and Muffin was not good. It seemed that she did not recognize him at all, and was terrified of him. Hissing, full hair up and only outside the room or on the fridge.

The second day I left for several hours, Puppy was locked in the balcony with food toys and a bed, buy Muffin did not move an INCH from the fridge. That bad was it for her.

Fast forward to present day, Biscuit and Muffin are now playing together, and I am happy to see their relationship progressing. Biscuit sometimes interacts with Puppy because she sees his tail moving, and want to play but Puppy is not well trained and thinks that chasing around is a way of playing. Biscuit is dealing with this way better than Muffin, who is now moving a little bit more but still incredibly terrified of the situation. Me and my gf are having fights over this as it is tearing me apart to see our dear cat being like this. I love Muffin like my own child, so this has to stop.

The big issue is that my gf considers her parents to not be suited for taking care of puppy. They did prove that by trying to feed him left overs after the vet said to put him on a strict diet.

I am very upset with this situation, Muffin is totally not happy, and poor Puppy is just an innocent dog that is used to live in the backyard, not in an apartment with two cats…I just really wish there was a way to assure he is taken care of properly

If someone has been through a similar situation, a reply would be appreciated
