Hey everyone, I’m in a rough situation here. My roommate and I live in an apartment with a bathroom, 2 bedrooms, and a large open living room/kitchen area. We have 2 cats, one is 3 years old — my roommate’s, and one is mine. A 12 week old kitten that I just adopted 2 weeks ago.
Prior to adoption, the kitten showed no signs of ringworm. We were keeping him mostly separate from another cat because the kitten was being dewormed. However, we let him run around and play with the other cat, as long as they didn’t use the same litter box.
The bad news — 5 days ago I noticed what I thought were spider bites on my arm. I looked far and wide in my bedroom for a spider, but no luck. The next day, another “spider bite”, this time on my neck. I went out for dinner with my brand new girlfriend that night, who was at my apartment multiple times and playing with the kitten, and explained the situation to her. She mentioned that it looks like ringworm (she has had it before.) Oh no…
So I immediately text the vet, and she calls me immediately. Says there’s a ringworm outbreak that seems to have stemmed from my brand new kitten. I got Lotrimin, and have been applying it and using Antifungal shampoo. My girlfriend, who also owns a cat, went home and did a full body scan. Turns out I gave it to her, too. Absolutely embarrassing and I feel horrible for it, but she’s taking it as well as she could.
So now the kitten is being given oral ringworm meds. But I don’t know where to isolate him. Right now he’s in my bedroom, but I need to sleep in there unless I’m going to sleep on the couch for 2 weeks.
TLDR: My kitten gave me and my brand new girlfriend ringworm. Super embarrassing and I want this to end as soon as possible. I also feel bad not being with the kitten. Should I sleep in my room, where my kitten with ringworm is? Or sleep on the couch for 2 weeks?
