Hamster acting strangely

I just went to check on my hamster and he was acting in a way that he never has before. He was stood on his hind legs facing the wall of the cage with his back to me and didn't move at all when I opened the door of the cage. Usually, he would suddenly move if I did this to either hide or come over to me so it seemed so strange. I then went to stroke his back and he didn't move so I picked him up and he just let me. I held him for a little bit and he just stayed still. Normally, he would be scurrying all over me. I then put him back in his cage and went to get him a treat. When I came back, he was still motionless in the same spot and then he eventually ran back into his bed to hide. Has anyone ever experienced this behaviour with hamsters before and know what it might mean? I've recently gotten a kitten and I'm worried that he's stressed out by the smell
