I need help deciding, is it okay to get a cat?

I need an objective opinion.

I am a very busy student. I work full time at night (7 days on and 7 off) and during the day I'm often sleeping and then absorbed in whatever homework assignment. I live alone on the ground floor of a town home near my school and work.

I've been through a really bad breakup in the last year, and have been craving any kind of affection and companionship. I'm too busy with my other responsibilities to date effectively, so my first thought would be to get a pet. I don't want to be unfair to it though. Dogs are out just because they require much more in person time, but I am torn on perhaps a cat. I feel like this might be a decent compromise on nap partners.

I only have the one room, which is the whole basement, so I think it'd have enough space to run around and have fun. I don't mind clean up after litter and shedding, don't care about my furniture, and no one upstairs is allergic (and likely it would be kept in my area only).

I know cats sometimes are expensive if they have health concerns, plus adoption fees, but I'll take one from a shelter that's already spayed/neutered, and a friend of mine who works at a vet clinic can get me on a cheap insurance plan.

It seems like a good idea... I just wanna make sure I have the resources to take actually good care of the animal. I can give at least 30 mins of time per day on care, and easily double that on weeks that I'm off. Is that enough? Anything I'm forgetting?
