Must my male cat be put on Royal Canin Urinary S/O for life?

Last week, my male cat was diagnosed with UTI and the vet just prescribed some medications. Yesterday was the follow up, and another different vet attended to my cat. He plainly tells me to feed my cat strictly RC Urinary S/O for life. RC is pretty pricey and tbh I wish to treat my cat like a normal healthy cat, feeding him normal dry food. Is it ok to discontinue the SO after he had recover?

I don’t mind mixing SO with basic urinary care dry cat food or normal dry food or put him on wet diet on large basis but just giving SO alone for life is a pretty daunting idea for me. My dear kitty haven’t even reached 1 y/o.

Any advice is appreciated! Thank you.
