Hi, Im a first time dog owner of a 2 year old dog (male) and for three days including this one he has been acting weird around his food bowls. The first day he simply didnt touch his food, which rarely happens, although every once in a while it does so it didnt immidiately set of any alarm bells to me. Yesterday he started whining and barking over at his food bowls as if he didnt want to approach them. We tried to change bowls, place the bowls elsewhere, give him fresh food, put a small amount of cheese in the bowl to entice him, but noting worked to get him to eat his food as normal. Once or twise he took a single pebble from the bowl but he had a very tense body as he did and he then quickly retreated afterwards. He had no trouble taking food if I held it in my hand or put some on the floor, so Im fairly sure it isnt the food that is the problem. After sitting down on the floor with him for a long while i slowly but surely got him to eat out of the bowl until he had eaten all of it. I hoped that would be the end of it and that he would behave normally today, but today we have the same problem. He barks at the food bowls as if he is hungry but he doesnt want to approach the bowl.
I did a bit of googling and while it seems that dogs being afraid of their bowls is rather common, none of the potential causes or reasons for this seem to be applicable to my dogs situation. He has eaten from a metal bowl his whole life so that shouldnt be the issue, especially as the issue remains when we switch to a plastic bowl. Its hard for me to imagine that it is an issue with his teeth since he doesnt have any problem eating out of my hand or from the floor. For the same reason I don't think there could be any strange smells from the bowls.
Ofcourse Ill contact my vet if the problems continue any longer, but I wanted to see if any internet people had similar experiences or guesses as to what it could be.
