New Cat Aggressive but Perhaps Innocently So

Hi all,

My partner and I moved in together a few months ago. We have a dog (that I adopted) and two cats (that he adopted). After a lot of discussion about getting a third cat that would be there primarily to bond with me, we found a great fit and adopted her two weeks ago.

We did a great introduction through separating the cats into different rooms and switching the rooms every other day with separate litter boxes, food bowls, etc. When we started letting them get to know each other, there was obvious stress and hissing, but that was to be expected. The two cats who have lived here were territorial and made it known, but it never escalated past hissing, growling, and an occasional swat.

Now they are spending most of their time communally together, other than when we’re at work and they’re separated.

The new cat is 3 and a maine coon mix with tons of energy and a friendly, smart, curious, and mischievous personality. The oldest is 8 and the alpha, and the youngest is 2 and completely timid. We hardly even get any attention out of her because she is so shy.

They’re learning the new rhythm and found their respective sleep spots, sharing litter boxes and food bowl with no issues. However, the new cat is super aggressive in her play and boundary testing, especially when she’s high energy. She will run up to the other cats to surprise them, but I think it’s her innocent attempts to play and interact as she never hisses or initiates any physical swatting etc. The OG cats HATE it and let her know then she walks away and we distract her with toys or pets.

I’ve never had a cat like her before; so fearless and curious and seemingly aggressive. Is this something to be worried about or is she just innocently aggressive in her want to socialize with the other animals?

Note: her previous owner traveled a lot and the cat was alone with little stimuli often. I think she’s been lonely and does not know how to socialize and adapt to a pack.
