trazodone for dogs

hi so recently i had a really bad vet experience. i have a rescue pitbull with anxiety, he is dog reactive and people reactive. however, he normally does VERY WELL at the vet. this last time, the actual vet was immediately complaining about his anxiety and within 5 min of being alone with him (because of covid) he peed himself (she complained about this too) and was acting aggressive toward the staff.

she ended up coming out to my car and lecturing me about his anxiety and how difficult it was to deal with (he is currently being trained) and told me i should have already had him on trazodone and that he’s going to die early without it. this is the same vet we’ve been going to and trazodone has never been mentioned until now.

i have a friend whose dog went on trazodone and i personally saw how it dulled his personality and made him sleep all day. i’m not trying to act like i know best or anything, i just want to know what others think; is trazodone really the best thing for my dog? will he really live a short life without it????

i plan to complete training regardless, but i don’t want to subject him to that kind of medication for the comfort of myself and others, if completing his training will result in the same or even better behavior. that’s all.

i do also plan to change his vet because i can’t have someone that’s going to make him more anxious and afraid of people, essentially undoing his training. she was too fearful and annoyed and he clearly sensed it.
