Ah, boy. This’ll be a long one.
So I adopted a kitten just a little over a year ago. We had some inappropriate urination issues that drove me absolutely insane for about three or four months. Then it suddenly stopped. Now it’s suddenly a thing again and has been going on for around two months.
She’s been to the vet for a urinalysis each and every time this issue has popped up. Always has a clean bill of health and vet agrees that at this point it sounds like a behavioral issue. My roommate’s cat popped up with a UTI around the same time the urinating problem started and for a moment, we thought that perhaps that correlated with why my cat suddenly stopped using the box. Unfortunately, even after treatment and replacing the boxes, no dice.
This is where things get tricky.
She only urinates on my hardwood floors, and only in front of doors. Front door, back door, garage door, bathroom door, you name it. We’ve tried blocking off some of these entrances to the best of our ability, but considering they’re walkways, our attempts are poor at best. In addition to this, we just recently had a cat sitter visit the house while we were gone with family for Thanksgiving. We apologized for the urination problem in advance just to find out she had no problems at ALL while we were gone. Uhhh, what?
She has gone back to urinating on my floor and it’s night two of being back home.
Now, we brought my boyfriend’s dog with us when we went out of town. My next best guess now is that my cat is feeling stressed out by the dog. The dog avoids the cat like the plague and we’ve never really seen any aggressive behavior between the two, but after all is said and done, this seems to be the most probable. The weird part is my boyfriend and his dog moved in back in July, so there were no urination problems for about three months after they moved in. I’m lost at what to do or how to go about treating this now. We are both diehard for our animals - it is much more likely for him to move out before either of us considered rehoming. So now what?
