Ok, bit of a tricky situation here. About 4/5 years back, my family had only 1 pet, a young domestic short-haired cat named Midna. Fast forward about 2 or 3 years and my other brother adopted a Dog, a now adult Beagle x Cavalier named Piper. On the first attempt to introduce them, Piper would bark, whine and chase Midna, who would run into my brother's room of the 3rd floor of the house. Midna's master has become very protective and has refused ever since to attempt to introduce them to each other. Midna now lives almost exclusively in her master's room on the third floor, where Piper is forbidden from entering, ever. Midna gets to leave the room at night when Piper sleeps in her master's room, or when it gets too hot upstairs, but it is still not an ideal situation for her.
The problem gets worse when Piper growls and scratches at the door to Midna's room, provoking Midna, who sits at the other side of the door, to puff her tail and start growling back.
They have had a hand-full of encounters since, always ending in barking, puffy tails and loud arguments between owners. I have let Piper see Midna from a distance a few times, where Midna has full control to leave if she wants, and recently I have been able to calm Piper very quickly afterwards, and that is as much progress as I have been able to make.
Is there any way to finally get them used to each other? Or have we left things too long? Also, what would happen if Piper were to get to Midna? Does she want to play or kill?
tl;dr: Cat and dog haven't met after sharing house for years, is it too late to introduce them to each other?
